My sweet little boy is sitting next to a sweet little girl in kindergarten who is teaching him how to draw princesses. I have been the recipient of many, many princess drawings this week. I love that the first one says "Hello Prinses" in the bubble. Do you see how much his drawings have evolved? His last one yesterday is so much more detailed. He makes my heart smile.

I worked on this over the weekend and oh my, how it's changing. I cleaned up the older branches from the previous drawing that weren't working for me, I did some paint dripping techniques on the background for fun and started removing the tire swing. I'm kind of sad to see the tire swing go since it really is a lovely memory but, it was looking and feeling like an afterthought on the piece. I had lots of magical fun with my grandparents willow tree outside of the tire so, it still means a lot to me even without the swing. I am going to think it over some more as I continue on this piece. I am loving the overall sweeping feeling of the tree now though. To be continued ...

I started this painting back in May and have left it unfinished since. I usually don't let paintings sit undone for that long. I love the subject matter and story but, the picture wasn't quite matching up to what I had in my mind. (If you want to read about the story in my original post, click here.) When we moved in Oct I packed up my canvas and easel and ever since I have been working on smaller artwork. I recently set up my easel, put the unfinished painting below on it and let it sit there for a few days.

Having a fresh look I noticed that the slope of the branches wasn't right and that I needed branches cascading forward. The painting sat there for a couple more days. Then, last night around 9pm I was reading blogs and came across this post by Deborah Velásquez. It was just what I needed, thanks Deborah! I love Virginia Lee Burton's book The Little House. I adore the story and admire her beautiful illustrations. I hadn't seen much of her other work though and I learned so much from Deborah Velásquez post. Her tree illustrations are truly lovely. The minute I saw her trees I jumped of the couch, asked my husband to call me in 30 minutes and I painted. It was an exhilarating 30 minutes, one in which I felt an overwhelming sense of calm and guidance that I was tapping into the true magic of my memory of my grandparents willow tree and tire swing. Then, when I came back inside the house I heard the theme song to M*A*S*H, a show my husband rarely watches and one that was my grandfather's favorite. A show he had to watch while he visited us. Even when he fell fast asleep on our recliner we were not allowed to turn it off, despite many protests from me and my sisters. He passed away when I was in elementary school and I have always associated M*A*S*H with him. Thanks for the hello grandpa.

E rocking out on a branch guitar and H posing front and center while their friends climb.

Pretty much every day after school I pick the boys up, we meet up with friends and head to the nearby park to play. Before we started this ritual the boys would take the bus to and from school and I would go entire days without ever getting dressed and going outside (one of the downfalls of working from home). Now I am forced to get dressed, pick them up, talk with other parents and enjoy some fresh air every afternoon. The boys, of course, really enjoy it. At first they played at the playground but, since we go so often they started exploring the park, climbing trees, collecting sticks and just being boys. They even have a secret fort (aka a large tree that has branches to shield them) that they love. When we head home everyone is a bit calmer, we spent some quality time together and I can go back to work in a happy house. It has ended up being my favorite moment each day.

This whole dream board thing is pretty new to me. I have always kept stacks of inspiration in folders, on shelves or in binders but, never on a pin board. Boy, have I been missing out. I created my first dream board this fall and propped it up above my desk but, it was a bit too high to really look at it every day. So, I decided to hang the board on the wall right next to my desk where I can clearly see it. Man, is this cool! I can take in the art and words daily. So much better then having them tucked away in a binder.

This board is ever evolving, as new imagery and words inspire me they can go up and things that no longer serve me can come down. I am really excited about this simple pin board of inspiration!

om: taking time to pause and plan

I love wrapping up the end of the year and setting new goals. But right now, I'm a little stuck. 2011 was a roller coaster in many ways and I think I am still processing it. So instead of trying to gather up a quick set of goals for the new year - I am taking time to pause and plan. I need to let space in, gain a new perspective and see what opens up and guides me. I hope to do just that by limiting my time online, spending time outdoors, starting my mornings with zumba and ending my days with meditation or yoga. I have been playing around with the idea of choosing my first "word of the year" and look forward to seeing what that ends up being. I just need a little more time for my thoughts to simmer before I commit to my 2012 plans. Are you heading into 2012 with resolutions planned and ready for action or you still trying to gather your thoughts?

The newest painting in my mandala series, Connected in Spirit is now for sale in my shop. I finished this during Art Every Day Month. It's so much fun and many people have commented that it looks like a ceramic tile. I love handmade ceramic tile so, I am flattered that some think so! This is an original acrylic painting on canvas measuring 8"x8"x1".

Connected in Spirit is the third painting I have made loosely based on the spiritual chakras. Here are the first and second mandala paintings I created this year. Connected in Spirit is a whimsical, colorful work of art.The color violet represents the Spiritual Crown Chakra which is positioned at the top of the head, connecting us to one's own spirituality and encourages us to live in the present. This chakra is often pictured as a lotus flower opening to allow spiritual awakening in an individual. The red petals around the outside of the design represent a lotus flower. A Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Wherever a center is found radiating outward and inward, there is wholeness - a mandala.

a simple advent calendar

I found this easy, no frills advent calendar idea over at Simple Mom and as soon as I saw it, I knew I would create it. Easy, no frills and free (I had all the supplies) = my kind of craft! I love Simple Mom's idea of using post it notes for each day. I had a bunch of them around the house and they allow you to be flexible with the activities by removing or switching days easily.

For my calendar, I used an earring display I made for my booth, cut up some 8.5x11 card stock into strips 4.25x2, folded them in half, wrote numbers with black colored pencil and added the post it note inside the flap.The kids and I decorated the cards with simple patterns. Then I hung them on the thread. Easy peasy!

I chose a mix of activities for the month: some crafty, some fun, some magical and some that give to others. Here are some of the activities I have planned:

Attend a holiday play
Visit a holiday light display
Make paper snowflakes
Drink hot chocolate and watch a holiday movie
Donate to the Phoenix Children's Hospital
Bring treats to the kids teachers
Drive around town to see lights
Tape quarters to toy or game machines around town
Pop popcorn and watch a holiday movie
Buy toys to donate to toys for tots
Go ice skating
Bake cookies
Go through books and toys for donation

Well, its the final day of Art Every Day Month and I am a little sad to see it go. The creative momentum I had this month was invigorating! My final work is this mosaic featuring art made during the month of November. I got the idea to make a college of my AEDM creations from this wonderful mosaic over at Deborah Velásquez's blog. I love her work, she made some amazing things pieces this month as did so many artists! It was fabulous to see what other artists were creating each day and how they approached the challenge. Some went with the flow and let the creativity unfold, some had a theme for the month and others practiced a specific skill or medium. All of it amazing stuff, truly!

It was interesting to see how my medium jumped from day to day and how much jewelry I end up making! That kind of surprised me. I am so grateful I choose to participate. I first learned about AEDM in 2009 and every year I thought oh no, I couldn't possibly find the time and energy to create every day. Well, this year I found the time and the energy and it was so much more rewarding then I ever imagined. I felt really content, calm and happy this month. My husband even mentioned today that I seem a lot less anxious lately. Maybe all that jumpy energy I have is really my creative spirit trying to burst through. Something to think about the next time I am feel extra jumpy.

Making Jewelry

I really have been on a jewelry crafting kick ever since getting a batch of new beads (thanks again Jamie)! I knew what beads I wanted to use today and instead of starting blindly I thought it would be nice to browse some magazines for inspiration.

I stumbled upon The bamboo cutter's wife design by Molly Schaller in Stringing Fall 2010 and that inspired the bracelet.

Next I came across Tweet Wishes by Lorelei Eurto in Stringing Summer 2010 which inspired the necklace.

I am happy with the final piece thank goodness. I restrung the design over and over again before it finally felt right. I am grateful I found Lorelei's design to help guide me along. I have a tough time creating asymmetrical jewelry but, I love the look so much that every now and then its worth the extra effort.

An Angel

Still on a beading kick, new supplies can do that to a girl! Thank you again, Jamie. The minute I saw the yellow fire polish beads and gray pearls I knew I wanted to make a simple necklace with them. I love the yellow and gray color combination.

The boys beaded with me today. They both really enjoy making patterns. They made stretchy butterfly bracelets as gifts for their cousins.

Pigeon Pose

I was feeling a little stressed and guilty about it being the very end of the day and I had not yet created any art. So, tonight I practiced the art of yoga before bed. I pulled out my mat and the yoga deck I bought a few months ago and have barely used to picked out a few poses to do. I gave myself 20 minutes to connect with my breath. Whenever I practice I am always sure to include pigeon pose, it is one of my favorite yoga poses. I love pigeon because it is a fabulous hip opener. And I have learned that I hold a whole lot of stress and emotion in my hip. This is a pose that teaches me, time and time again to love myself and let go, melt into it and BREATH and has brought me to tears, the good kind of tears, on so many occasions.

Butterfly Doodle Cards

I thought about these cards I started last week and decided it was best to have a black and white background to really allow the butterflies to stand out. I kept thinking that using book pages would be nice, and they would have been but I wanted to be a little more expressive. So, I picked up a very fine sharpie at the store today and doodled the background. Here are some close ups:

These were so calming to work on, I forgot how much fun drawing lines and swirls is. I was doodling at our dining table while my boys each read a book to me. Isn't that a nice? Ethan read "Don't Call Me a Pig" (a book about javelina's) and Hudson read "The Hungry Caterpillar". Once they were done reading they wanted to create there own butterfly doodle cards too!

Ethan is making a card for his Nannie who just underwent surgery.

Hudson is making a card for a girl in his class he is very fond of.

I was generously gifted a stash of beads by Jamie, my friend and co-worker at Soft Flex Company. She inspired me to bead this week! I started the 2 necklace designs above late last night then I finished them, made earrings and a bracelet to match today. The pink pearl designs are strung on Black Onyx Soft Flex Wire and the grey pearl necklace is strung on White Quartz Soft Flex Wire. Sorry for the blurry photo. I don't have a good photo taking space setup in my new home yet.

This Meatless Monday post is a recipe I found on AllRecipes.com. These enchiladas are easy to make. They are also very accommodating to modifications, add beans, chiles or change the veggies. This is how I made them, the original recipe can be found here.

Zucchini Enchiladas

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 cups diced zucchini
1/4 cup black beans or re-fried beans
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
8 (8 inch) whole wheat tortillas
1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes

Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the onion and garlic in the oil until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in zucchini, 1/4 cup black beans, 1 teaspoon chili powder, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Cook until softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove zucchini mixture from skillet and reserve.

Melt butter in the skillet over medium low heat. Stir in flour, salt, remaining 1 teaspoon chili powder, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in milk; whisk until thickened, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of Monterey Jack cheese.

Spoon 1/3 cup squash mixture down the center of each tortilla; roll up. Place filled tortillas in prepared baking dish, pour cheese sauce over. Cover and bake in preheated oven until hot, about 25 minutes. Remove from oven; sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese and the chopped tomatoes.

Butterfly Cards and Logo Design

Day 5: I thought it would be nice to make a card set with some watercolor butterflies I created. I cut them out and wanted to create a nice background for them but, the one in the back right is what I created instead. I hate it. I decided to show it to you anyway since I did spend time creating it and its okay to totally suck sometimes. We'll see what I can come up with the next time I try ... I can't be any worse, haha.

Day 6: Today my creating consists of a logo design. I am only going to show a small snip of my sketch since it's just the beginning stages, I will show more as the design progresses.

Positive Statements

I sat down with the intention of creating 4 color panels and was going to call it quits but then my impatient self wanted to push on. I think I want to use each panel for a card and found these positive statements that I thought would be nice in a set. The outcome is a little more heavy handed then I originally envisioned but, that is what transpired today so, I'm happy to go along with it.

Since you can't pull out a set of watercolors in front of a 7 year old and 5 year old without them wanting to join in, here are the boys creating while I let my background panels dry.

november biz goals

October has been a month of adjustments. We moved. My youngest son had never lived anywhere else so, this move was all new to him. My boys are now sharing a room for the first time and that can be hit or miss depending on the day. We experimented with new ways of getting to and from school, bus, drop off and walking to see which route was the best for everyone. We are all settled in and really enjoying the new place.
This did take up a fair amount of my time in October so, I guess I can forgive the areas where my productivity took a nose dive.

October Goals

alphabet bunting painting for little girls room - I dropped the ball on this and need to get an 8x10 canvas so I can start.
graphic design work for Olive- work in progress
work on outright accounting program - yay! I finally got this up and running. Very humbling to see what I am actually bringing in vs. going out. I have some planning to do for 2012.
follow along with esty's holiday boot camp and whip shop into shape - well I started off strong and them lost momentum. I'll try to keep up.
add to shop: art pendants, bookmarks, greeting card sets - I got 2 bottlecap bookmarks added but that is all.
blog about new watercolor sketches and scrabble artwork - done, blogged here, here and here.
creative every day autumn theme - seasonal dream board sounds interesting and I'm going to try and start with fall - yay! so happy to have done this. See my seasonal dream board.
move into our new rental home and get settled! - all set.
family walks, yoga and dance - a few walks, one yoga session and no dancing.
others things i accomplished this month ... posted 4 new recycled bottlecap magnet sets, completed wedding ceremony card and favor tag for Sara & Josh's garden inspired wedding suite (which I need to share with you this month), and have been following along with the World's Biggest Summit presented by Goddess Leonie. So amaaazing!

Here I am at 9pm on Art Every Day Month (AEDM) day 1 with no art to show. Oh well, that's okay. I'll use today as an introduction and get started tomorrow, day 2. I have been a blog reader and participator of Creative Every Day since I started my blog. In the past I have been a bit intimidated about joining Art Every Day Month hosted by Leah every November. I question where I'm going to find the time but, I decided to give it a go this year. I have the desire to create more art in general so. I am going for it to stretch my creativity and to see what transpires!

Breathe

All week I have had yoga on my mind. I have been admiring Art Asana's 2012 Yoga Pose Desk Calendar by Eliza Tobin, I have been listening to the ambient yogi sounds of Desert Dwellers, I even wrote down the word "connected" in my sketchbook this week because I was feeling so very unconnected. Deep down I have been yearning for the mind body connection I receive when practicing yoga.

When I cancelled my gym membership in August I was sad to no longer have my yoga and dance classes available to me but, I thought I would put a new self motivated routine in place. I had the highest hopes for yoga since it is something you can do anywhere with as much or as little time as you have. But I underestimated my need for having a specific class time in place and having an atmosphere that feels good to practice in. I have been saying to myself just do it already but, at the same I think ... I have other things to accomplish, it isn't quiet enough, I am not in the right head space for letting go and stretching deeply and so I wait for another "better" time.

Last night I finally gave in to my yoga mat. It wasn't the most opportune time but, I said to myself enough is enough, I need this. I pulled out my mat and started stretching while Bert watched the world series right next to me. I tuned out the tv, I breathed, I stretched and I felt great. I felt my body lighten, make space, felt my inner strength and focus arise and my stress melt away. Feeling just how stiff and tense I was during my practice awakened me to just how far I am from the flexible and centered self I was just a few months ago. In class my yoga teacher would remind us that a flexible body is a flexible mind.That saying always resonated with me and right now my body is rigid, tense and very far removed from where I want it to be. Why do I deny myself the things that make me feel so good, so peaceful, so connected, so loved? What is it inside that makes me rebel against self care?

I have a dear friend who loves scrabble and is getting married in 2 weeks! As a gift for her and her soon to be husband, I painted them these personalized initial scrabble tiles. I do not usually paint so precisely but, they were totally worth the extra effort of measuring and using guidelines. I thought these little paintings turned out really sweet and she just loved them. It brings me joy knowing that the paintings with bring them joy in their new home.

One of my creative goals is to make seasonal dream boards. This month's Creative Every Day theme is Autumn and that fit right in with me wanting to start a fall dream board so, yesterday I finally got to it. It has taken me sooo long to get myself psyched up to start a dream board but, once I started it only took 30 minutes to complete. I choose all sorts of things to inspire me for the season: recipes, home decor, paper goods, plants and flowers, colors and sayings. I think this will be a really great way to make use of all the wonderful magazines I have lying around and get me excited for each season, I don't know why it has taken me so long to embrace the whole idea of a dream board, but I am happy I finally did! I choose a simple cork board and push pins setup so I can easily rotate the images each season and if something isn't working for me or I come across a new piece of inspiration I simply change it up in the moment.

Here's a peek inside my watercolor sketchbook, this time I created butterflies! We have more flowers in the yard in our new home then we did previously and I have been enjoying butterfly and hummingbird sightings in the mornings. It's magical to watch them flutter about.

Friday was moving day! It is crazy to see all our stuff boxed up and waiting to move. I have been de-cluttering and simplifying for almost 2 years and I have to say I was pretty surprised to see how much stuff we have now that's all in one place and it's a lot more then I thought! For my one moment today, I will say goodbye to our current home and welcome in our new one.

We moved in to our current home when my youngest son was 6 months old and my oldest was 3. This house has been such a blessing to us. The open floor plan gave us visibility to everything which is great with little ones toddling around. The room we designated as the kids playroom was open to the kitchen, dining room and den and has been just perfect. The circular skylights in the great room allowed so much natural light into our home that we rarely had to turn on the lights during the day. And on the rare occasion of a cloudy day the whole house would darken and lighten with each passing cloud and that is such a strange and magical feeling to have inside your home. The laminate wood, tile floors and wood blinds throughout made the home much more comfortable for our allergenic family then the heavy curtains and wall to wall carpeting we had previously. It also made for easy cleanup when doggies made messes, things spilled, play dough was sculpted or we had an art play day. The sizable yard gave us ample space to play and entertain. The huge garage allowed me to carve out a little art studio of sorts and that has made me really happy. And lastly the community has been excellent. It is beautiful, well-kept with lots of amenities we have loved like pools, playgrounds, trails and tennis courts. Goodbye wonderful home, we thank you for the memories!

In our new rental home I welcome the intimate space and the cozy den feeling my husband and I grew up with. I welcome the kitchen being slightly out of the way so, I hopefully can't see any unfinished business in there as I'm relaxing on the couch. I welcome carpeting back in our life to help with sound control (two young boys can be pretty loud)! I welcome our first ever doggie dog for our golden retriever Chloe. I hope she loves it as much as we do :) I welcome a playroom with a door and full walls - again to help with sound control, haha. I welcome a sweet little backyard with enough space to play but not too much to manage. I welcome the really pretty patio tile and fans to relax on. I welcome the pretty mountain view outside our front door that I will see every time I come and go. I welcome us home.

big bugs at the desert botantical garden

David Rogers’ Big Bugs

It's no secret that the Desert Botanical Garden is one of my favorite places to visit. We were members last year and went pretty regularly. They have rotating garden exhibits and it's a beautiful place to stroll around and let the kids explore. Sadly our membership expired in August so, this year for National Free Museum Day we decided to use our free pass to visit the DBG and see the incredibly cool exhibit David Rogers’ Big Bugs. There were 11 enormous, whimsical bugs crafted by sculptor David Rogers from fallen or found wood, cut saplings, twigs, raw branches, twine, bark and other natural materials.

Ethan loved using the garden map to find all the bugs - for him the hunt and the bug facts were super exciting. Hudson was more interested in the butterfly exhibit that was going on as well so, that was his highlight. I was smitten with the bug sculptures themselves. They are huge and magnificent and at first glance I thought they were made from metal but, it's wood - many glorious types of rich colored wood. The praying mantis and dragonfly were my two favorites but, all of them were beautiful really. If you are in the Phoenix area I definitely suggest checking it out.

After driving past some beautiful birch aspen trees on our road trip through Flagstaff, Arizona last month I was inspired to sketch them. I had a little help on this sketch from a dreamy book I'm using as my watercolor muse right now titled Dreamscapes: Creating Magical Angel, Faery & Mermaid Worlds in Watercolor by Stephanie Pui-mun Law. Here is the photo I snapped while driving and my sketch.I decided to give the trees a bare winter feel with a monotone color palette. I let the paint do its own thing without trying to control it too much which resulted in a nice wispy feeling, I think.

September, you were lovely as always. You helped us celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this month at the Grand Canyon and you welcomed my baby boy into the world 5 years ago. He was presented with the honor of Student of the Month in Kindergarten this month! I especially love the start of the fall season, the colors, the color temps and many park play dates are on the horizon. I hope to visit some areas in our state with changing leaves this year since we didn't really see too many last year.

On the business end I have been working on a wonderful garden inspired wedding suite, just finishing up the ceremony card and favor tag. I sold two original paintings, created a painted set for a wedding gift and had a commission for a painting for a little girls room. I am really happy about more painting opportunities coming my way!

create necklaces with art pendants I made a few months ago - nothing new to report here either, I am toying with the idea of posting the pendants for sale with out designing an entire necklace. we'll see ...
outright accounting program - I had really hoped to work on this. I'm going to make it a priority for Oct.
pick up on preparing for move - we found a place to live and the packing has been put in high gear! This month I mostly cleared out my craft stash, the hallway closet and laundry room closet. All those fun areas I stuff random things. Only 12 days until we move!
make time to move - family walks, yoga and dance - a little yoga and a few morning/evening walks this month. Nothing too strenuous but definitely helped maintain my stress.
others things i accomplished this month ... posted 6 new recycled bottlecap magnet sets in my shop, rephotographed all my necklaces for sale, sold the connected in love mandala painting and created a painting to compliment it for the same customer titled connected in truth mandala.

one moment: new beginnings

Many moments this month have been about new beginnings, the start of my favorite season; fall, a baby shower for a good friend who is having twins (yay!), a wedding shower for someone I've been friends with for over a decade and our family embarked on the search for a new rental home. In the midst of all the moving talk my 7 year old son got himself hooked on the HGTV show House Hunters. He has been recording episodes like a mad man and was so excited last week when we started looking. He loved every house he saw and wanted to discuss all the options just like on the show. It's been pretty cute. We have even discussed careers building houses, designing houses and decorating houses. He says he would like to design houses and some buildings too but no bigger then 5 stories, because he doesn't heights.

Funny how house hunting goes, we saw an apartment and 3 houses the first day. We saw a really cute house in a nice neighborhood and we thought it was a great fit for us. After a day or two I started worrying about the size of the home and how we would fit everything. My need to explore as many options as I can kicked in and we were on the prowl driving around neighborhood to neighborhood and of course searching online. After seeing a number of different options we came right back to the first house we liked. We went back to see it a second time and this time I brought a tape measure, took down all the rooms measurements and created the little layouts above. Once I figured it all out I found that everything fit wonderfully. I totally should have done that the first time around and I could have saved us the wild goose chase - then again I probably would have done the exact same thing! We were approved for the house this week and will be moving 2 weeks from now. New beginnings are certainly a challenge but also a wild adventure full of unexpected surprises.

I recently picked up a neck piece in an effort to show clearer pictures of the necklaces I have for sale in my shop. I have tried to draping them in creative ways and photographing myself wearing them but neither of those really worked out. So, for now, this is the best way I can think of to show how each necklace design drapes and fits. Do you think these photographs would help you as a customer visualize wearing the design?

potatoes and peas in red curry

This Meatless Monday post comes from a cookbook I am currently reading, Gourmet Vegetarian Slow Cooker by Lynn Alley. I have made this recipes 3 times in the last 2 weeks because of how much my husband and I love it!

Potatoes and Peas in Red Curry

2 pounds small red potatoes, cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces
1 yellow onion, sliced vertically
1 can of coconut cream (I used 1 can coconut milk)
2-3 tablespoons red curry paste
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon soy sauce (I omitted this)
1 large sweet potato, peeled can cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces
1 cup frozen peas
Salt to taste
1/2 cup dry roasted cashews (I omitted these)
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Wash potatoes and add them with the onion into the slow cooker. Mix coconut cream (or milk), red curry paste, sugar and soy sauce together and pour over potatoes. Cover and cook on low for about 3 hours (potatoes should be a little tender when pierced with a fork).

Add sweet potato, cover and cook on low for about 2 1/2 hours or until all potatoes are tender. Add peas and salt to taste and cook uncovered for 15 minutes longer. Add cashews and cilantro to each serving.

I serve it with rice but, you could also eat on its own.

Then, 2001

Bert and I have been married for 10 years today! We celebrated last week by spending the day driving north with stops at Sedona and Flagstaff along our way to the Grand Caynon. We had long walks, delicious quiet (kid-free) meals together, and a precious night of just the two of us. It was awesome.

Now, 2011

Today we celebrate all that we have been through together ... friendship, love, growth, adventure and of course our share of challenges. I am grateful that we have always worked through our challenges together. We truly adore each other. I can literally spend all day wasting my time with with my husband (and many days we do just that) without every tiring of his presence. I am grateful to have a constant source of love in my life and am so thankful for this man, our family and the life we have built together.

Bert, you have my heart.

I wore the orange pattern today, and in fact I still have it on! Sorry for the slightly creepy picture of me. I was trying to get a good angle of the head wrap, I usually squint in pictures and I am trying to work on that. haha.

I wear my hair up in a bun or pony most days so, having these bold and beautiful head wraps will make me look good and feel good with little effort, easy peasy. The one I'm wearing now has stayed put all day without the need for any bobby pins and it is so comfortable. Aren't new accessories fun?!

This month's creative every day theme is history, so, today I'll share with you some pictures from our trip to the grand canyon last week. The Grand Canyon reveals a beautiful sequence of rock layers that serve as windows into time.

From Wikipedia: The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, the 15th national park in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. It is considered a Wonder of the Natural World.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet / 1,800 metres) Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted While the specific geologic processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists,recent evidence suggests the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to its present-day configuration.

one moment: a grand day

My one moment this week was at the majestic Grand Canyon. Bert and I traveled north for an early celebration of our 10th wedding anniversary. Despite living in Arizona for 13 years neither of us had been and thought it was about time we went. It was magnificent. Truly a wonder to behold. I felt so tiny and insignificant in the presence of this massive canyon with its layers of time preserved in the rock. Sure puts things in perspective. My husband and I laughed at my ever increasing deep conversations that had us pondering everything that came to mind at that time and space.

I have much to be grateful for ... the cancellation at the historic El Tovar that allowed us to get a room right on the canyon at the last minute, my mother in law for watching the boys and our dog Chloe, the beautiful road trip Bert and I took there with stops for breakfast in scenic Sedona and lunch in downtown Flagstaff, and mostly for the soulful and loving memories the canyon brought to us in celebration of our 10 years together.

This cactus looks like my stomach felt - Phx Desert Botanical Garden

So after a very nice week of hitting the trail each morning my OM moment was being hit with stomach pains for 5 days. Out of nowhere I felt my stomach swell and a pain emerge on my right side and lower back. It was a pain I had once before, while vacationing in New York this past June. I thought the pain was from too many protein bars while traveling but, alas no protein bars where had leading up to this past Saturday. I found out that I have a family history of gallbladder issues and I think I am experiencing them too. On Sunday I started researching online and I found gallbladderattack.com. It has a wealth of diet information. Bert ran out for beets for me to eat to help my pain and it worked so, now I'm trying to change my diet to be gallbladder friendly. According to the website I should avoid eating greasy fried food, meat, dairy and gluten. Yikes!

I finally started feeling better Wednesday night and by Friday I was back to eating 3 meals. I am currently meat and dairy free. On a positive note, I lost 4 pounds this week making my total weight loss 6 lbs in 2 weeks. Sweet! I picked up a vegetarian cookbook at the library and made my first meal last night ... potato and peas in red curry sauce ... yum! If you have a veggie recipe you love, please share it with me. I'd love to try it.

August was a great month of creative energy. Being an August baby, I always make sure to have a good time in August (no matter how stinking hot it is here in Arizona). The kids are back in school, they are really enjoying learning and the new activities they are experiencing. Ethan is learning the violin this year and Hudson is giddy about everything at school especially computer lab and P.E. I am enjoying everyone in the house being back on a regular schedule.

August Goals

promote etsy birthday sale - did this all month and had a few sales!
finish "blue" bracelet I started - need to pick up crimps before i can finish
creative every day challenge check in, theme this month is "red"- blogged here and here.
create a 35 before 35 list - Fun! I tweaked it a bit all month and I think I am happy with the final list here. Now the real fun will be doing these things

continue preparing for move - Put this out of my mind for the month, I needed a break.
make time to move - family walks, yoga and dance - I started walking my myself in the morning and took the kids a couple of evenings. I hiked tonto natural bridge with my family and I joined a friend's yoga class one night which was wonderful.
others things i accomplished this month ... opened a fine art america shop, although not ready to show it yet, posted new braided necklaces for sale in my etsy shop, made my first hemp necklace, created the teach play love painting for our dear daycare provider who we said goodbye too as our youngest child went off to elementary school and lastly finished commissioned painting for a baby girl's nursery.

one moment: hitting the trail

My OM this week is taking the time to explore a community trail. Trails that meander through our community are a nice perk that I have not taken advantage of until now. You see, I cancelled my gym membership this month and not having my zumba and yoga classes readily available has made me a little anxious (especially since I packed on some unwanted pounds this summer) so, I came up with a plan. After the kids get on the bus for school I would to take a walk, every day. I decided to make the trail closest to our home my first destination. I walk to it, then do interval running/walking while on the trail and walk home. It takes about 30 minutes and has been really great to be outside each morning while its a cool 90 degrees. ;)

The quiet trail has been a destination I look forward too. I was sad about leaving my gym classes but, in hindsight I had become pretty comfortable and the shake up in my workout is just what I needed to re-motivate myself and I shed 2 lbs! Plus, I have been seeing bunnies each morning and they make me smile.

I was spoiled rotten with birthday cash this year. Some may think that sounds impersonal but, I love and appreciate it so much. Money is always tight and having spending cash means I can browse my ever growing wish list of lovely things and actually make a purchase! So what did I treat myself to this year?

This handmade hemp purse / clutch / wallet from Ickady Bag. I haven't bought a new bag in so long, I have been rotating the ones in my closet for awhile and now that my kids are no longer babies I wanted something small and I am in need of a new wallet so, this purse / clutch / wallet sounded perfect! It was shipped today and I can't wait until it arrives.

My address book is in desperate need of an update, I really need to keep myself in check with the journal and I am hoping The Yoga Deck makes it easier for me keep up my yoga practice at home.

I am a braid-o-maniac! I have been braiding things like it's going on of style (which I hope it isn't because I'm having too much fun). Braids all the rage these days ... from hair to jewelry to accessories I see braids everywhere! I jumped on the braid train and created some pretty Soft Flex Wire braided necklaces. All three use the same technique - braiding 3 colors of .019 Soft Flex Wire with beads - yet, each one has it's own personality.

my first hemp necklace

I gave my little man Hudson a hemp necklace that used to be mine. He's been wearing it to daycare and Ms. Laura's daughter (who he adores) said she liked it. So, he decided we needed to make her one. Never one to back down to a crafty challenge I said sure, bought some hemp and checked out some tutorials online. I found these two videos; How to Start Hemp Necklaces and Making a Spiral Knot Hemp Bracelet, the most helpful to me.

Being someone who has a fondness for all things hemp it's strange that I never made a hemp necklace before. After I got the hang of it I let Hudson get some good knots in. I ran out of hemp about half way through and needed to tie on extra but in the end it wasn't noticeable.Once done, Hudson picked out a lampwork flower pendant and I picked out a bead for the clasp and my first hemp necklace was born.

I have to say the process was truly meditative. I carried it around in my purse for the weekend and knotted when I had free time. I enjoyed the repetitiveness and portability of the project. I think making one for myself is the logical next step, right?

First day of school! My little man was all sorts of nervous and excited this morning for Kindergarten. I wish I could meet him for lunch but, the hubster thinks I should let him experience his first day on his own. I know he's right, so instead I'll let his lunch box note let him know I'm thinking of him.

I tried lunch box notes when Ethan went to Kindergarten and after 2 days he kindly asked me to stop. I guess he didn't think it was cool for him to be getting notes and stickers from his mom as he was a big kid and all. But with Hudson starting school, I had to give it another shot . I browsed pinterest (the best thing since sliced bread, am I right?) and found printable lunch box notes by Lori McDonough of Fresh Picked Whimsy that I thought had a "cool kid" vibe.

My youngest son will be starting kindergarten and as exciting as that is (and it is so exciting!), he will be leaving his second home - Ms. Laura's Daycare and Preschool. He began going to Laura's when he was just 6 months old, so it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to her and her family and all the wonderful friends we have made there. Our family has been so blessed have found Laura. She is an amazing caregiver; kind, patient, nurturing and has taught my kids so much. She gave us peace of mind that they were well taken care of while we provided for our family and that has meant the world to my husband and I. To show my appreciation for Laura and her family I created this painting as a gift of gratitude.

watercolors and the color red

I picked up a watercolor sketchbook - yay! I have my book and watercolors in my bedroom so, that I can end my day with a little painting. This month's creative every day theme is red so, I have been using lots of red in my work.

I am trying to get a feel for how watercolors work exactly. As you see with this feather, I tried applying layers like I do with acrylic paint and it turned out really muddy (see the middle of the feather). I also tried mixing colors directly on the paper as I often do with acrylic instead of on a palette and found that it didn't really work out.

For my next sketch, I lightened up and tried not to have such a heavy hand. The red maple leaf I drew is much looser and I think it works well with the paints softer qualities.

And with this tree sketch, I felt a bit more in control. I had a nice calm feeling while painting, letting the paint lead me instead of me leading it.

I was delightfully commissioned to do a painting for a baby girl's nursery. The mother doesn't have a specific theme or color palette for the nursery so, I focused on creating something girly and filled with beauty and of course flowers came to my mind but, I didn't want to stop there - I added some loving words about daughters, I think it adds just the right about of sweetness to the painting.

blue braided bracelet

During July, I got bite by the braiding bug, the trend seems to be everywhere and I love it! I braided a couple of bracelets with soft flex wire and seed beads. Last month's Creative Every Day theme was blue so, that inspired the color palette. After braiding I realized I didn't have any 3x3mm crimp tubes to finish the design. I hope to pick some up from Sara this weekend (I'll be at her house helping stuff the wedding invites I designed for her, woo hoo!).

choosing simplicity

I recently read the book Choosing Simplicity: Real People Finding Peace and Fulfillment in a Complex World by Linda Breen Pierce. It's ironic really because I feel like my life is anything but simple at the moment. For reasons beyond our control we will be moving from our rental home. We are unsure of when we are moving, where we are going and all the other challenges that lay ahead.That sounds anything but simple!

The book is filled with stories of real people who have chosen to well, live simply. I found the stories inspiring and enlightening. I was nodding along in agreement with the things I do now and the wishes and dreams I have for the future. I enjoyed reading the variety of perspectives and appreciate that the author emphasized that there's no exact formula for this type of life style.

This is how the author defines simple living:

Simple living or voluntary simplicity are lifelong processes in which we turn loose the quest for more wealth, status and power in favor of an authentic life of inner peace and fulfillment.

Excerpt about materialism and productivity (page 107) that spoke to me:

If materialism is addictive, so is our desire for productivity and efficiency. We are constantly trying to milk the most out of each minute of the day. Our love affair with productivity and efficiency generates busy, chattering minds. Often we have trouble relaxing when we finally get some leisure time; we cannot easily escape the habit of working, thinking, and above all, saving time.

Simple living does not mean you must reject the material comforts in life. It means letting go of anything that interferes with a meaningful quality of life. This for me, means I need to strip away activities, stuff and work that doesn't fulfill me and bring peace to my life. My desire for productivity in particular is in need of tweaking. I am always trying to see how I can squeeze in something while doing something else.

This book affirmed many of the choices I've made about the of life I choose to lead and I am hopeful that I will learn to escape the habit of working so often. My only criticism is that there is some repetitive material and the author plugs the book "Your Money or Your Life," way too many times. However, looking past that this book gives you lots to think about and good resources are included.

What is typography? Typography is the arrangement of type and the selection of fonts (typefaces), size, line spacing (leading), adjusting the space between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between letters (kerning). Type is made of shapes which influence how the words are to be read, and the emotion they convey, giving every typeface a personality.

exploring watercolors for the first time

I have wanted to play with watercolor paints for awhile so, when Alisa Burke (one of my favorite artists) recommended the Koi Watercolor Field Sketch Set on her blog I placed it on my wish list and last month I finally bought it! I don't have any watercolor paper yet so, I made do with my current sketchbook for now just to play.

Watercolors have always intimidated me a bit because I love to work up lots of layers of paint and watercolor doesn't quite work that way. After my first session I am a little more comfortable. I feel like I used the paints in a very "acrylic" way but, part of that is probably do to my paper. So, the next time I am art supply shopping I will have to pick up some watercolor paper to further explore. For me, trying something new is always a welcome challenge.

Wowza, June sure did fly by. We uprooted ourselves from Arizona and traveled home to Long Island, New York for 2 whole weeks to visit family and friends, explore NYC, catch a Phish concert and hit the beach. It was a great trip and aside from my stomach being a constant issue it was perfect. I'm not sure why my stomach goes into disarray each time I go away, it's such a pain, literally. It must be stress induced since I was fine as soon as I returned home. What is that all about?! Anyhoo, here were my goals for June ...

new painting: breathe

Breathe

My sister and I share a common love for yoga. For her birthday, I wanted to paint something that spoke to our love of yoga and that connection we share. I wrote the words "breathe" as a gentle reminder for her to slow down and relax amidst her busy day. The colors were chosen based on her home's decor.

The lotus pose in yoga takes its name from the position of the feet and legs representing the petals of the lotus flower. Once in this posture, you can use it for meditation, chanting, and pranyama (breathing).

This is my second 8x8 painting and I am really enjoying the smaller format. It's a nice size to work on anywhere in my house and isn't anything in miniature pretty darn cute?!

My husband and I are from Long Island and each year we head back for a family visit. We took the kids lake-side in Connecticut, park-side in NYC and beach-side on Long Island. Bert & I visited Philly, caught a Phish show in New Jersey and strolled around Brooklyn (where I thrifted a fabulous blouse). I was on a beading bender last month and had beads all over the living room. My 4 year old son loves to create and he was oooing and ahhhing over my beads. When he asked if he could touch them I replied "Hey! Do you want to string some beads?" He was so excited and got his big brother to join in the fun. They say when you put it out into the universe, the universe answers. Last month I said my hope was to act on my inspiration and boy did I. As a person who goes to extremes, I was wrapped up in a flurry of creativity all month. I did quite a bit of painting and beading and listed a bunch of new items in my shop! Now I'm ready to go on summer vacation :)

May Goals

baby nursery painting - ahoy painting done, mailed to Colorado and super cute!
design jewelry with resin art pendants - Created a necklace for a giveaway this month on a super awesome blog which I was really happy about, but I was hoping to get more done.
complete 1 new painting - 2 paintings in progress which is awesome, willow tree with tire swing and a small abstract design I still need to blog about.
add artwork page to this blog - I added "artwork" and "design" pages and I am feeling fairly comfortable with them. I'm not confident with expressing myself with words and end up over-thinking it a lot. How do you stop editing and decide it's good to go?!
get involved with creative every day theme - I didn't work on the theme but, I did check in and see what other artists are up to and am really happy I did.
family art play time - we played with beads
setup monthly meal plan - ugh forget it. This isn't happening.

My dear friend and long time coworker, Sara, is marrying to her love Josh later this year and I am working on their wedding invitations (yay!). They are planning a beautiful wedding in their garden so, I thought a good place to start would be with, well, their garden! Lucky for me Sara has shared loads of flower pictures from their yard on their blog so, that's where I went for inspiration.

Above are Sara's pictures and below are my first round of digital illustrations.

These flowers were truly a joy to draw! I have a few favorites for sure. It has been so nice to have a reason to illustrate. They have lots of orange trees and rose bushes which should be in bloom for the wedding so, we have decided to focus on those two plants in particular. Stay tuned for round two of sketches. I love weddings and flowers so this project is a win-win as Sara & I would say ;)

I just shipped this sweet little sailboat to Colorado. This was a commissioned 8x10 painting made for a baby boy's nursery based on this Ahoy Mate NoJo bedding set.

Here is the progress from start to finish.

At first I was thinking about a border and using the words ahoy! but quickly decided I would simply paint the sweet little sailboat without cluttering it up.

painting in progress: willow tree and tire swing

Growing up there was a big beautiful willow tree with a tire swing at my grandparents house. I sometimes wish I can be there in that magical place again. I recently looked up my grandparents old house on Google Earth to see if I could get a look at that tree. Sadly, it didn't give me a clear picture. The tire swing was something my sisters and I loved to play on whenever we visited our grandparents and I especially loved just sitting under that magical tree. This is a painting in progress of my memories of that weeping willow and tire swing. I feel like there is a long way to go on this one. It's going to be tough expressing just how wonderful this tree is in my minds eye.

The Round Table by Georges Braque 1929

About the Artist: Georges Braque studied Art in France. He was a painter and a sculptor.

Imagination activity: Close your eyes. Now picture a round table. Imagine objects sitting on that table. These objects could be some of your favorite things. Now open your eyes - show the print. Is this what you pictured? What did you picture? The name of the painting is The Round Table.

This type of painting is called a Still Life. Any ideas what that might mean? Still life = objects. This artist created several still life paintings on a round pedestal table. This one contained some of his favorite things.

What objects do you see on the table? Guitar, sheet music, knife and apple, bottle, newspaper and a pipe.

In 1907 George Braque met a man named Picasso. Has anyone heard that name before? Together they created the style Cubism. Cubism = objects are broken apart and put back together in abstract form. Objects are being seen from different angles at the same time.

Can you see different shapes? Sphere, cylinders, cubes.

What feeling do you get when you look at it?

What do we call art that doesn’t look like real life? Abstract.

George Braque created many large scale paintings. This painting is 57 3/8” x 44 ¾” - good to show the kids a point of reference for this size, I had the tallest kids stand up (he is 54") and explained how the canvas was taller then the boy.

My table would have a book, chocolate, tea or coffee, a handmade ornament (i love ornaments!), slippers and flowers. If you wanted to paint a table with your favorite objects what would they be?

mother's day

On Mother's day I awoke to find a beautiful basket of pink tulips and handmade cards from my kids. I relaxed at home with my family, went through the day slowly and reconnected with some of my bliss's.

My wonderful mother in law, aka Nannie, had boys for a sleepover on Friday night.
We enjoyed a family lunch date on Saturday with Nannie and Tom.
My toe polish is eggplant purple thanks to a Mother's Day pedicure from my husband.
Ethan and I looked at The Art Book and reviewed artists we learned in his class.
Hudson and I played marbles and built a marble track.
I read a few chapters of Choosing Simplicity and caught up on blog reading.
I finished my tree of life belly cast painting that I began back in January.
I stole a few minutes in the studio and worked on my newest painting in progress.

To all the beautiful mama's in the world including my mother, mother in law and godmother, I hope you all enjoyed your day too!

Remember this tree of life painting that I began back in January? I finished it yesterday! This painting was long overdue and it is so nice to have finished it on Mother's day. I made the pregnancy belly cast when I was expecting my now 7 year old son, Ethan.
